Program

Camping is a very important part of Troop 26. The troop camps one weekend a month. In addition, the troop participates in a week ling Summer Camp adventure and other high adventure activities. Visit the Summer Camp and High Adventure pages to learn more.

All scouts should plan to camp with the troop. Camping is the best way for scouts to develop outdoor skills as well as learning to be good team members and leaders. Troop 26 scouts will be responsible for setting up their patrol’s camp site and cooking all of their meals. In addition, scouts will be able to work on merit badges and advancements.

The program for campouts are developed by the SPL and his leadership team. The SPL decides the location of the campout, the theme for the weekend, and the focus (games, advancements, skill development, etc.) for the weekend. With guidance from the SPL, each of the patrols makes detailed plans ahead of the campout so that they can be prepared when the weekend arrives. Occasionally, Troop 26 has a specialized campout, such as summer camp, a WOW event, or float trip that requires a special level of effort. It is the SPL’s job to pull together the scouting resources to make sure that these events truly are extra special for the troop and guests.

Visiting Scouts: If you are a visiting scout and you would like to camp with the troop, you need to visit with the SPL and Scoutmaster Bill. Be prepared to tell them who your sponsor is and which patrol you plan to camp with. You also need to be prepared to have a completed medical form turned into the troop prior to camping. Be sure to check with the patrol to find out the cost of the meals. We want you to have a great time and plan to join the troop as a full-time member!

New Scouts: If you are new to the troop, be sure that you have completed your medical paperwork and it is on file with Mr. Keilbarth. You should plan on camping with the Vikings patrol until you earn your tenderfoot rank. Bring your scout handbook to the campout and plan to work on advancements at the campout. Make sure you tell your patrol leader you plan to attend and tell him which requirements you intend to focus on over the weekend so that they can help you successfully complete your requirements. For the campout, you only need to bring clothes, a sleeping bag/pillow, a flash light, a water bottle/nalgene, toiletries, your scout handbook, items your patrol leader requests, and any other personal items you choose (electronics and valuable items are strongly discouraged). The troop will provide patrol boxes for cooking your food, tents, and dining flies.

New ASMs: If you are an adult leader planning to camp with the troop for the first time, you must complete your Youth Protection Training before camping. This course can be taken online by visiting the okscouts.org training site. You will need to provide your YPT certification to Jim Gonders so that it is on file. The planning meeting for the campout will be the Monday before campout weekend. Be sure to let the campmaster know you will be attending (and sign up to help on the duty roster if you are able) and pay your camp fee to Randy. ASMs will be responsible for bringing all of their own camping gear (tents, chairs, cots, sleeping bags, water bottle, mess kit, etc.), but all cooking supplies will be provided by the troop.
