I hope you are staying healthy during this crazy time. As you can imagine, we are behind on our planning for the Troop 26 flag program for this year. I have heard from a lot of you with questions about whether we are having the program this year and the answer is that we are planning on it. However, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 crisis right now. Our entire scouting program has been greatly impacted by the Coronavirus and will continue to be for several more weeks. We must all do our parts to prevent the spread of this virus and protect the most vulnerable in our population. As scout leaders, we are doing everything we can to teach our scouts how important it is to take this situation seriously and we are following all BSA, local, state, and national guidelines. We are currently having virtual troop meetings and practicing social distancing. The safety of our members and their families as well as our flag program customers has always been our number one priority.
It has been great to hear from so many of you wanting to make sure that we continue with our flag program. The support has been fantastic. I don’t want the uncertainty of the situation to keep us from doing the necessary work and planning to make sure that you will have flags this year. In fact, it is as important as ever to demonstrate the unity and the support for our leaders and the love of our country at this time. What better way to do that than to participate with all your neighbors in this great program. One of the things that I have learned in working with other organizations and programs during the Covid-19 outbreak is that transparency in communication is paramount. I will endeavor do my best to provide as much information as possible letting you know what I do and don’t know at this time. Feel free to read as much or as little as you like.
2020 Program Signup Considerations
This is the fifth year of our program. As far as I know, it is the largest flag program in the Tulsa metropolitan area. We only serve a few neighborhoods in the Tulsa and Broken Arrow areas and we plan to continue to limit our service to those areas so that we can maintain the highest level of integrity and service to our program participants.
The first flag holiday is Memorial Day. Generally speaking, we will plan to have flags out sometime over the weekend before Memorial Day and will pick them up a few days after Memorial Day (sometimes as late as Saturday). Memorial Day is May 25th. That gives us roughly 8 weeks, which may or may not be enough time for the situation with the Coronavirus to clear. Keeping in mind that the situation could escalate and get much worse or it could clear up and we may be back to normal. For planning purposes, we will assume things are going to clear up.
One of the activities we take on each year is to build additional flags. Typically speaking, we make 100+ new flag sets which get distributed to our crews. Over the course of the year, we use those flags in several different ways. On occasion, we have to make additional flags. Last year, every single flag that we had made had been put into service so that at the end of the year, we had no spare flags. Our plan for this year, was to start off by making an additional 150 flags. However, I don’t know if and when this will be done. I will work with our teams to see if we can distribute the workload differently this year to maintain social distancing.
The reason this is important is that we use the extra flags for our very first holiday to place them at the homes of people that had signed up in the previous year, but had not yet renewed their service for the current year. We then place flyers at their door to remind them to renew. This is a great way for us to get renewals and reach out to those people who don’t use email, which is our primary method to connect to our program participants. If we end up with a shortage of flags this year because of renewals and new signups, we will not be able to do this for this year.
Because I don’t know for sure if we will be able to place flags for Memorial Day, I want to caution everyone if you choose to sign up now. We will follow BSA and government guidelines and if those guidelines prevent us from being able to place flags, we will have to continue to defer until restrictions are lifted. I hope that everyone will understand and will respect that we are doing what’s right and in turn teaching our scouts to follow the guidance of our leaders and do what is right. Hopefully, that won’t be an issue. If you feel like you would be upset if we did not place a flag even though you have paid for the service, I would ask that you please defer from signing up for the program until the situation becomes more predictable. We do this as a service to our community and as a and fundraiser for our scouts and program. Our goal is to build community spirit and we do not want to create any angst in the process.
If you choose to sign up now, you are guaranteeing that you will have a flag placed in your yard IF (and I stress IF) we are given the green light by the BSA and the local government officials to proceed and we can meet all safety requirements. At this time, we will sell service until all available flags are sold. This does mean that there is a risk that we will run out of flags and may not be able to take additional signups for the first holiday that we are able to place flags, but we should be back to normal for second holiday. It is particularly important this year that we have as much notice as possible that you want to participate in the program. We have an amazing team that works very hard to serve everyone, but we have additional challenges that we need to navigate this year.
If, for whatever reason, we are not able to place flags for one or more holidays this year, we will provide a credit for 2021. We will not issue refunds. Rather, we will extend the service into 2021. Issuing refunds on this scale creates a massive amount of work for our team and a great deal of financial unpredictability for the program and for the Troop. Please keep this in mind when signing up for service.

How the service works
After you sign up for the Troop 26 Flag Placement Service, a team from Troop 26 will bury a flag sleeve in your yard. The sleeve is 15 inches long and is made of PVC pipe. It will be placed low enough that it will not be hit by lawn mowers.
Flags will be placed for 5 holidays throughout the year. The Holidays include the following:
- Memorial Day
- Flag Day
- Independence Day
- Patriots’ Day (September 11th)
- Veterans’ Day
A team from Troop 26, which will include three or more scouts and two adults, will place the flags before the holiday and will retrieve the flags after the holiday. Flags can be placed up to 3 days in advance of the holiday and retrieve up to 3 days after the holiday.

More About the Program
Troop 26 has developed this Flag Placement Service as an opportunity for the troop to be more visible in the community and to assist with the fundraising needs of both the scouts who participate in the program as well as the troop itself. Troop 26 is a special troop and very few troops in the world can stack up to the program offered by Troop 26. With over 150 scouts and more than 60 ASMs, Troop 26 is one of the largest troops in the United States. The troop is responsible for over 750 Eagle scouts over the past 50 years. Each year, the troop offers a rich program to help develop our scout members into the most respectable young men in our community. By supporting the Flag Placement Service, you will help support the following events/programs that are put on by Troop 26:
- Monthly Campouts
- Regular Courts of Honor
- White Stag Leadership Program
- Pine Tree Leadership Program
